Ages 8-12
South Location — TBA: June 24-28
East Location — Community of Christ: July 8-12

For the first time ever, CYT Kansas City is offering a camp which will give campers aged 8-12 the opportunity to perform an actual show! Campers will have the opportunity to audition for roles on the first day of camp and will perform the show on the Friday of camp at the camp location. For campers who want to audition for a role, abbreviated music and script excerpts (“sides”) will be provided on the CYT website to enrolled campers to prepare for their auditions and callbacks. You do not have to audition in order to be in this camp; all campers will have the chance to sing, dance, and act their way through this fun, upbeat show! Please note: Auditions and callbacks will be closed. Space is limited, so sign up soon!

Full show day camps meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show will be performed at 5 p.m. on Friday at the same location as the camp.

Seussical Kids Synopsis
Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in Seussical KIDS, a fantastical musical extravaganza from Tony-winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once on This Island, Ragtime). Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat, our narrator, tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child, who gets in trouble for thinking too many "thinks." Horton's challenge is twofold – not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must also guard an abandoned egg that's been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant! (courtesy of Music Theatre International).

Character Breakdown:

Jojo: JoJo is the audience’s link to the story. The audience follows the narrative through his/her eyes (Jojo is also referred to as Child).
The Cats: The Cats (Cat 1, Cat 2, Cat 3) are mischievous, spirited creatures who take JoJo and the audience on quite an adventure.
Horton: Horton is a loveable elephant with a heart of gold. Horton has great loyalty and conviction to save the Whos.
Mr. Mayor: Mr. Mayor is the mayor of Whoville and the perfect picture of patriarchy. He tries to keep the town happy and secure, which is quite a job since the tiny Whos are always in danger of being swept away and lost.
Mrs. Mayor: Mrs. Mayor is the mayor’s wife and is most concerned with trying to make sure her son, JoJo, stays in line.
Gertrude McFuzz: Gertrude McFuzz is a bird with tail envy! She is a perfect match for Horton.
Mayzie LaBird: Mayzie LaBird is a sneaky bird who tricks Horton into helping her take care of her egg. She is fun, jovial and has a careless spirit.
Sour Kangaroo: Sour Kangaroo is as sour as a kangaroo can be and has a good deal of attitude.
Wickersham Brothers: The Wickersham Brothers are a group of trouble-making, mischievous monkeys!
Judge Yertle: Judge Yertle the turtle presides over Horton’s court proceedings.
Vlad Vladikoff: Vlad Vladikoff is an eagle who drops Whoville into a field of clovers!
Ensemble: The Whos, Jungle Citizens (1-5), Fish, the Wickershams, the Talk Show Host and Marshal are all essential roles for creating the vivid and imaginative world of Seuss.
