Xanadu JR. is inspired by the Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical and the Universal Pictures' cult classic movie that starred Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly. Xanadu JR. is a moving, electrifying tale of endless fun that will keep audiences in stitches while the original, legendary chart-topping tunes lift them out of their seats. Xanadu JR. follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach, California, on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time – the first Roller Disco. (Hey, it's 1980!) But, when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation, and chaos abounds. There’s lots of room for large disco dance numbers, Xanadu JR. will have your students rolling along (no skates required!) (Courtesy of MTI)

One parent (or adult family representative) of each camper is required to volunteer as part of a Parent Production Team.

PLEASE NOTE: No cell phones, smart watches, or other electronic/wireless devices will be allowed at camp.

Auditions:

We will hold auditions for those who would like an opportunity for a role, solo, or featured dancer; however, you do NOT need to audition in order to participate in this camp. Auditions will be held on May 29 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., and callbacks will be held on May 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. Both will occur at the CYT Studios (6800 W. 153rd St. Suite A). Students who choose not to audition will be placed in the ensemble.

Those who wish to audition must prepare a one-minute song, be prepared for a short dance audition, and perform a memorized monologue, which will be posted on this page by early April.

Students are strongly encouraged to provide sheet music to be played by our accompanist. We understand this is a different expectation than a regular season CYT audition; however, as this is a master-level camp, we strive to prepare students for the world beyond CYT. Community and professional theatres typically require those auditioning to provide sheet music for an accompanist to play. If students choose to take advantage of it, a middle school camp audition provides students a chance to practice this skill for both auditions outside of CYT and auditions for CYT’s high school level master camp, which requires sheet music for the audition. If you have never auditioned with an accompanist before, check out THIS ARTICLE written by CYT teacher and parent Michelle Evans and/or THIS VIDEO from Playbill to learn more about preparing your music and interacting with the accompanist.

Students should wear jazz shoes and comfortable/modest clothing for their dance audition.

Video Submissions: In person auditions are strongly encouraged for the benefit of both you and our directing teams, however, we understand families sometimes have conflicts with our audition dates. If you would like to submit a video audition, you may film a video of your student singing 60 seconds or less of a song of their choice, performing one of the provided monologues (posted on this page by early April), and dancing 60 seconds or less of a choreographed routine. The dance routine should include at least one turn and a demonstration of your flexibility (i.e. kicks or splits). The audition video should be emailed to campcoordinator@cytkc.org no later than May 29 by 12:00 noon.

Character Breakdown:

Sonny Malone - Male, age 20-30. Young male lead from the beaches of California. He is wide-eyed, full of dreams and can be a bit sensitive; after all, he is an artist! While Sonny may not be the brightest, he is very sincere and earnest.
Kira - Female, 20-25. Greek heroine and loveable, young ingénue. She begins the play as Clio, the youngest and the most idealistic of the Muses. With the addition of leg warmers and an Australian accent, she quickly becomes Kira to help Sonny realize his dreams. She is ambitious, smart and like Sonny, pure of heart.
Danny Maguire - Male, age 40-50. A real estate magnate and owner of the Xanadu theater. This is a wonderful part for a male actor who is adept at playing character roles. He should be a malleable actor who can evolve from being guarded about protecting the theater to becoming partners with Sonny and then betraying him.
The Andrews Sisters - Females, age 20-30. The Andrews Sisters (Maxene, Patty and Laverne) are an exact duplicate of the Andrews Sisters that were famous in the 1940s. Vocal range: Eb-B3.
The Tubes - Gender-any. An iconic, hard-rockin' new-wave band of the 80s. Cast young performers who are fearless and can really rock out. Must be able to dance well.
Melpomene - Female, age 40-50. Muse of Tragedy, is the eldest of the Muses and is most responsible for plotting against Kira.
Calliope - Female. Muse of Epics, is Melpomene's "Wing-Muse." She is equally devious and listens closely to her sister's direction.
Other Muses - Erato, Euterpe, Polyhymnia, Terpischore, Thalia and Urania. Each Muse should embody their specific role (i.e. Thalia, Muse of Comedy should have a comedic knack).
Zeus - Male. A big presence; he is after all, the king of the Greek gods.
Hera - Female. Zeus' wife with grand stature and power and known for her comparable status to her husband.
Hermes - Male. Hermes was the god of shepherds, land travel, and literature. More specifically, he was known as a patron of poetry.
Thetis - Female. The Goddess of the Sea who tells the pivotal story of Achilles and his vulnerable heel, which in turn, changes Kira's perspective about really loving Sonny.
Aphrodite - Female. The Goddess of Love.
Sirens - Female. Melpomene's nine alluring daughters, Molpe, Peisonoe, Thelxiepeia have solo lines.
Ensemble - Eros, Cyclops, Centaur, and Medusa. And of course, there is the Greek Chorus, which is the foundation for the world of the play. Each actor has a great responsibility to make the show as diverse and specific as possible. There are lots of fun songs and dances!
